The Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten has announced the acquisition of the messaging service and voice over Internet (VoIP ) , Viber for an amount of 900 million dollars ( 658 million euros) , in order to penetrate new markets with deals digital content , combined with e-commerce platforms and financial services.
The acquisition is given in full battle between messaging services . Viber , with a client base reaching 300 million users , has been on the market competing directly with WhatsApp, with 430 million users, and Line, with over 300 million subscribers worldwide .
Rakuten began its history in the digital content in 2012 with the acquisition of Kobo, one electronic reading service now has 4 million eBooks , magazines and newspapers and has customers in 190 countries. That same year acquired Wuaki.tv a Spanish company online video .
More recently, in September 2013, Rakuten acquired digital content platform Viki . He has invested $ 100 million on social networks like Pinterest.
