The mortgage market is still no light at the end of the tunnel. At the end of 2013 , the number new mortgage loans made registered its worst start since the economic crisis , adding only 197,641 , an annual decline of 27.8 % , according to figures unveiled on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics ( INE).
The number of mortgages on homes has descended by 84 % since 2007, when more than 1.2 million loans were signed on the market. The fall of 2013 in the number of foreclosed homes adds to the declines in the previous six years and although it has reached double digits, has moderated compared to 2012 when the signing of mortgages fell 33%.

91.8 % of the mortgages in December used a variable rate , compared to 8.2 % fixed rate. Euribor reference rate is the most used in the creation of variable rate mortgages , specifically in 86 % of new contracts. By region, which registered the highest number of mortgages granted on homes in 2013 were Andalusia ( 37,831 ), Madrid ( 30,997 ) and Catalonia ( 29,690 ) . All regions showed negative annual rates, mainly Murcia ( -35.3 %) , Basque Country (-34.6 %) and Castilla -La Mancha ( -34.4 %). The less negative rates were recorded in La Rioja (-6.6 %) and Aragón (-15.4 %).
The communities in which more capital for the establishment of housing mortgages were paid in 2013 Madrid ( 4.246 million euros), Catalonia ( 3252.8 million) and Andalusia ( 3215.1 million) .
