The month of January has been good for the tourism sector, and suggests that 2014 will be placed in the path of last year, when Spain experienced a record 60 million visitors. Not only was the best January since 2001 in terms of international visitor arrivals - more than three million - but also in terms of spending rise was greater than 10% , reaching 3.107 million euros.
The data recorded in the first month of the year was the highest in the time series, according to results released Thursday by the Ministry in the Tourist Expenditure Survey ( EGATUR ) . The increased volume of expenditure was mainly due to the increase in tourist arrivals , which was 12.3 % over the previous year, and the average stay , which rose 0.3 % to 9.7 nights .

Latin America, Nordic countries , the UK and Germany markets were the largest contributors to overall net expenditure growth , which stood at 286 million euros, while Canary was the most favored community.
Tourists from Germany met 15.3% of total spending, which grew by 6.5 % over the same period last year , slightly less than that experienced by British travelers increase, which disbursed 8% more than in 2012 . The Nordic countries , however , took the record : the increase amounted to 9.4%. The French market , meanwhile , declined by 1.9% , while markets such as Ireland, the whole of Latin America and Switzerland have provided positive results, with respective increases of 31.7 % , 30.6 % and 13 , 2%.
Canary , who had been consecrated by the survey Frontier Tourist Movement as a preferred destination by foreign tourists also took good results in terms of spending, which grew by 14.7 % and stood at an average of 1,170 euros per person. Catalonia and Andalusia also experienced increases of 8.4% and 11.5 % respectively, but the fastest growing community in was the Community of Madrid, with a rise of 16.9 % to reach a figure of 404 million euros. Valencia and Balearic suffered a drop in spending , while in other communities as a whole grew by 14.4 %.
Spending increased in both hotel accommodation ( 13.6%) , overnight stays in these establishments grew by 7.6 % in January compared with the same period a year ago , as in the non-hotel ( 13.6%), and the amounts paid by visitors with package tour grew most ( 17.5 % ) than those without package ( 6.7%).
