The Monkeys were the pre-Hispanic town of Valparaiso. Whales that have opened on one side and the relatives and friends of the fishermen they got into the belly of the animal and dispatched in six or eight days. They also fished tuna , conger , dogfish , smooth golden catfish, mackerel and octopus species exchanged with people inside that provided them corn and fruit of the carob tree . One of our historians imagine "children running around the banks fighting each other on the sand or throwing in quick dive from a rock to catch the fish that ate almost alive , not by cutting out the life-giving juice of the sea." Changos took our Mapuche word " alimapa " with that named the bay of Valparaiso. And if "map " means "earth" , "ali " means very dry , hot , burned.
Valparaiso has always been a place of fire and all sorts of calamities , natural or not: epidemics , shipwrecks , explosions, sea outlets , bombings , floods , earthquakes , looting , riots, massacres , floods . The New Year's Eve 1953 , a small fire claimed the lives of dozens of companies that firefighters attended the scene , unaware that underfoot were explosives that blew through the air .
Perhaps all left with the fact that Valparaiso owes its name to the Castilian town of Valparaíso de Abajo, of which he was a native navigator Juan de Saavedra , the first Spanish to arrive at their expense. Adjacent to Valparaiso Valparaiso Down Up there , of course , but the point is that beauty may owe its name to Valparaíso de Arriba , our Valparaiso owes to de Abajo.
Valparaiso has a very small area in the city plan , part of which was taken from the sea, and the significant majority of the population lives in the 42 hills that she has. In these hills, in addition to poverty , it has spread spontaneously architecture constructions that seem fragile vessels to sail , or about to burn. The fire appears suddenly in a home is an immediate threat to the neighboring houses, the neighborhood, and to the entire hill in the tragedy unleashed. Some of the elements of Valparaiso is the wind, and it was he who played us a trick this time , besides, of course , of the ill-fated hands that lit the fire . Once a forest fire that could be inconsequential , wind, due to an unusually warm air mass for this time of year, abruptly changed direction and brought the fire to the first homes , spreading then uncontrollably and in a few minutes . The results are obvious : destroyed about 700 homes and a death toll that is approaching 20 , and increases as it is discovered among the smoldering rubble .
The historic areas of Valparaíso are , since 2003 , cultural heritage , and they were not affected . Had a hard time maintaining the heritage value of the city, and only a mixture of awkwardness and fatality can explain, for example, that one of its flagship - the churches of San Francisco , has burned three times in the course of recent years. There is some unfortunate events in Valparaiso, to the point that "there is another city in Chile with a history of so many and varied misfortunes " as historian certifies Valparaiso, Leopoldo Saez . One of the many compositions sing Valparaiso Osvaldo belongs to "Gypsy" Rodriguez and his first line , that the inhabitants of the city sing with complete irresponsibility , is this: " I have never known in its history , a day born there simply ... " . In my case, Citizen of Valparaiso, Illustrious Son could not be him, because my family living in this region , my mother believed that the birth would have better security guarantees in a clinic in Santiago , the capital and only distant about 165 miles to the east. That was how I missed being born in Valparaiso , although in the next city, Viña del Mar , I have lived all my life. The truth is that I like to say that I live in Valparaiso and Vina del Mar habit , and anyone can see the difference . Yet these cities , very different from each other, have the virtue of sharing its inhabitants . Who lives in one of them so does somehow in the other. Its inhabitants are individuals of two cities and have something like a dual citizen nationality. At home , as a gift from his brother Alejandro , I have a painting of Gypsy Rodriguez. What does this painting ? A transparent house with two people and a cross on the basis of a compass rose , submerged in flames in the bay of Valparaiso. The work was done " in honor of all Valparaíso tragedies " as he left handwritten established author at the foot of his painting.
Álvaro Bisam Valparaiso described as " a city in black and white," and I think that is mourning, because death came through here many times , as the song also says Rodriguez . Is death and misfortune , but also the awkwardness , neglect and poor management of chronic city - attributable not only to the authorities , but to ourselves , the Buenos Aires - Valparaiso which prevents pass color, except in the postcards that make him travel agencies and seek to show as the magic city is not.
But we will not give up Valparaíso, although at this point are the government and the parliament which once and for all would have to take seriously what they have retracted for decades : the possibility of a special law for the city.
In Italy, Napoli supporters display a canvas every time you play the computer , which reads as follows : " We were born to suffer." The locals , and those who follow his football club, Santiago Wanderers in Valparaiso, Chile 's oldest and America, often repeat that phrase. But of course , we do not resign nor less complacency, because if one thing is a destination - suffering - quite another to accept it. So if you are born to suffer, it is time to ask ourselves how long.
Augustine is Squella National Award in Humanities and Social Sciences and professor of Philosophy of Law at Valparaiso University . He is the author , among other books, " As the years pass ," " Rider on the Rain" and " Do you believe in God? No, but ... "
