57.4 percent of part-time employees want to work in Spain

57.4 % of part-time workers in Spain , equivalent to 1.5 million people were employed fewer hours than they would like in 2013 , according to data released today by the EU statistical agency Eurostat .
It is the third highest percentage in the European Union (EU ) after Greece ( 72.0 % ) and Cyprus (59.0 %) and ahead of Portugal ( 45.9%) , Latvia ( 44.4 %) and Bulgaria ( 41.9%) .
In addition the data is more than twice the average of the Twenty-eight ( 22.7 % or 9.9 million underemployed ) and Eurozone ( 22.1 % or 6.8 million people ) .
The lowest percentages were in 2013 in the Netherlands ( 4.2%) , Luxembourg (10.3% ), the Czech Republic (11.4% ), Denmark ( 11.7%) and Estonia ( 12.4%) .
In Spain , among the economically inactive population - one that is not employed nor unemployed - were 1.1 million people between 15 and 74 were available for work but not seeking employment and 223,000 seeking work but not available immediately , within two weeks.
While both groups are not part of the labor force , they do have a certain attachment to the labor market and can be considered as an additional labor force of 1.4 million people , 6% of the total workforce, according to Eurostat.
The EU statistical office recalled that the EU Twenty-eight were in 2013 a total of 216.4 million people employed , unemployed 26.2 million and 137.2 million inactive.
Among the employed , 43.7 million workers were part-time , of which 9.9 million ( 22.7 %) were underemployed , meaning they wanted to work more hours and are available to do so.
In the EU, among the inactive population was 9.3 million people between 15 and 74 years available to work but not seeking employment and 2.2 million seeking work but not available last year.
Both groups can be considered as an additional labor force of 11.5 million people, or 4.7% of the total labor force, indicating Eurostat.
The potential additional labor force varied considerably between Member States , the most important of Italy ( equivalent to 12.6 %) and Croatia (12.1% ) and the lowest rates in the Czech Republic (1.6 % ) and Lithuania ( 1.7%).
