Iberia will resume three routes to Latin America and Europe from Madrid abolished last year as part of its plan to exit the losses that dragged on for six years. The airline justified reopening connections to Santo Domingo, Istanbul and Athens to productivity agreements reached with the pilots, ground staff and cabin labor adjustment after 2013. In addition , Iberia Express, the low-cost subsidiary , opens new destinations : Stockholm and Amsterdam.
As of September 1 , Iberia will offer five weekly direct flights to Santo Domingo , while start flying to Istanbul on 20 June with a daily flight . Athens, destination flights so far offered only during the summer months , will begin to be offered throughout the year by Iberia, Iberia Express with reinforcements in the summer months .
Iberia Express , meanwhile , will have two weekly flights to Stockholm, will be expanded to a daily service from 1 September. It will offer two daily flights between Madrid and Amsterdam from July 1 , which will be three day in September .
In the short run also increase frequencies from Madrid to Panama , Chicago , Rome , Berlin, Paris and a dozen more locations , as announced on Tuesday the president of the airline, Luis Gallego , overlooking the summer. Among the new direct flights to Boston and Los Angeles are recovered. "Our commitment is to Madrid, Spain and the T4" , said the manager in a press conference in which he also argued that the retrieved routes are profitable in the long term .
The cancellation of several unprofitable routes , announced in December 2012 and effective a month later, marked the beginning of a period of strained relations with the Government , which considered key connections with Latin America and the survival of the Barajas Airport as a major center connections (hub) . Of those , continue down connections to Cairo and Havana. Direct flights to San Juan de Puerto Rico and Montevideo were canceled also .
The decision was in line with the restructuring plan submitted months ago by Iberia , according to its managers, ensuring the viability of the airline. This program included a reduction in flights of 15% and 15% reduction of the workforce. Therefore, and by the economic crisis , in 2013 Iberia recorded a fall of 16.5 % passengers . After applying the new measures, Iberia posted an operating loss of 166 million euros last year , representing an improvement of 185 million euros compared to the previous year .
Iberia says the key to return to these destinations in Latin America and Europe is in labor agreements reached between the management of the airline and the three groups that make it up - pilots, flight crew and ground staff . Thanks to them, the working conditions are relaxed , freeze wages and salaries are linked to results . In particular has been historic agreement with pilots Sepla , after years of a troubled relationship .
