Cement consumption in Spain has been at the level of the sixties after plunging 37.2% last May. In that period, demand fell to 1.26 million tonnes, levels parallel those of half a century ago, as the employer Oficemen.
In the first five months of 2012 construction activity absorbed 5.98 million tons of cement consumption, which represents a decrease of 34.6% over the same period last year.
Until the end of May, was consumed in Spain 57,594 tons of cement per day on average a third of demand, 2008, at the beginning of the crisis, according to the employer. The contraction in the first months of 2012 is added to reverse the sale of cement accumulated since the crisis began. Cement consumption decreased by 64% between 2008 and 2011.
Demand falls 37.2% in May
All this has led to a readjustment of production: cement plants located throughout Spain 34.7% cut in cement production in May to 1.40 million tonnes. In the full year, production fell by 28.8% to 7.07 million.
Oficemen considers that the construction sector has "traveled" to relaunch activity, an estimated potential linked to "the rehabilitation of buildings and infrastructure as a hydraulic plan, rail freight and road maintenance."
The director general of the employers, Aniceto Zaragoza, criticized that "public administrations in Spain try to contain the deficit at the expense of investment in public works, with negative consequences this has on economic activity, competitiveness and employment".
