The trade deficit decreased by 16.2% between January and April 2012, to 14,015.3 million euros, as reported by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. Improving the trade balance occurred even though exports fell in April for the first time since 2009 (0.8%), the worst year for foreign trade in Spain. Imports registered a decline in that month of 3.5%, higher than the decline in exports, which straighten some imbalance in the trade balance of 3.355 million in April.
The decrease in trade deficit occurred despite the fact that the energy deficit increased by 16.5%. Imports of energy products, 24.8% of the total, grew by 16.4%. For games, there were increases of 35.3% on purchases of coal and electricity, 20.6% in the gas and 14.8% in the oil and derivatives.
In the first four months of the year, Spanish exports of goods stood at 71,643.7 million euros, which is higher by 2.2% in the same period last year. Meanwhile, total imports registered a decline of 1.3% to 85,658.9 million euros.
Exports to EU (65% of total) decreased by 0.5% year on year. In the case of sales to the euro area (51.9% of total), there was a decline of 1.5%. Moreover, growing exports to the rest of geographical areas, except in the case of non-EU European countries (-1.2%), North America (-0.6%) and the rest of America (-39.1% .) Sales to countries outside the EU (35% of the total in the first four months of 2012) recorded an increase of 7.8% compared to the values of the same period last year.
Exports to countries in Asia grew by 17.8% (13.2% for China and 15.3% for Japan). Also increased the sales to countries in Latin America (5%). For its part, grew from the values of the first four months of 2011 as exports to African countries (22.9%), 18.1% in the case of Morocco, the Middle East, a 15.1%.
The trade balance with the EU registered a positive figure of 3,595.3 million euros, an increase of surplus of 651.6 million euros between January and April 2011. Also, there is a surplus in the euro area, estimated at 2,428.0 million euros, much higher than in the same period last year, when it stood at 59.8 million euros.
Finally, compared to non-EU countries recorded a trade deficit of 17,610.6 million euros, an increase of 1.3% annual rate. Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America are the geographical areas which recorded higher trade deficits, 7455.9 million in the first case, 4,654.9 million euros in the second, 2594.5 million in the third and 2396.6 million in the past.
