Retail sales fell again in May, bringing the total area and 15 consecutive months down by the weak household consumption and business, but at least slow its rate of descent. According to INE statistics, the overall retail during the month fell 4.9% in calendar effect adjusted terms, after removal of the difference in the number of working days. This cut from the same month of 2011 is a moderation with respect to the 10% drop in April, its biggest decline since 2003.
At constant prices, without discriminating on working days, the sector has reduced its sales by 5.6% in the first five months of 2012 compared to the same period of 2011. According to the statistical agency, sales of food products fell by 1.2% in May, while those of non-food products fell by 5.7%. Among these, the largest decline in sales occurred in the home computer segment, with a negative rate of 8.9%.
Also, if you do not take into account sales at service stations, which in May fell 8.3%, sales in the rest of retailing down 3.7% in the fifth month of the year.

For modes of distribution, all cut their sales in May, but the big chains, which increased its turnover by 0.6%. These shops also were the only ones to create jobs from May 2011, although the increase was minimal, 0.6%. In the rest, fell with the same intensity as in April, when it dropped 1.2%. With the exception of September 2011, when there was no change at all, employment in retail trade since August 2008 has been experiencing negative rates.
In home furnishings, sales fell 8.9%, while personal equipment fell 3.8%, those of other goods fell 3.5% and the power, the least have fallen after relapse recession were left by 1.2%.
For small chains, sales decreased by 4.6% in unilocaizadas companies fell 5.6% in supermarkets, 5.9%. For communities, retail sales decreased by all, especially in Castilla-La Mancha (-7.9%), Castilla y León (-6.4%) and Murcia (-5.6%).
