Unemployment fell for the first time in eight months, and the Social Security membership increased. Still, this April alone was better than 2008 and 2009, when the economic crisis manifested itself in full force. For April, boosted by the start of the tourist season mark Easter, typically a month of job creation. And the numbers offered by this time, marked by the second recession in three years are stunted.
According to details just the Ministry of Employment, the number of unemployed registered at the offices of the Public Employment Services (formerly INEM) stood at the end of April at 4.74 million people, after falling in the month in 6632 unemployed, percentage decrease of 0.14% compared to March.
When the comparison is year, the perspective changes: unemployment surges in reference to April 2011, recorded an annual increase of 11.1%, 474,875 more unemployed. The April unemployment reduction is just one tenth of that produced in the same month in 2011, when unemployment fell by 64,309 people. Only twice in unemployment has risen this month: in 2008 and in 2009, when there were 37,542 and 39,478 more unemployed.
Source: Ministry of Labour / The CountrySecretary of State for Employment, Engracia Hidalgo, admitted in a press release that the April unemployment data are collected "the negative impact of the economy in the labor market." By sector, unemployment fell in April in three of them, especially in services, which receives the impulse of the tourist season, with 8,304 fewer unemployed (0.29% less than in March). In the construction declined in 1388 people (-0.17%) and agriculture fell by 1,241 unemployed (-0.7%). By contrast, in the group without previous employment grew by 2,473 unemployed (+0.6%) and in industry, 1,828 unemployed (+0.34%).
Permanent contracts continued to decline, although the labor reform has lasted more than two months into force, a further sign of the destructive power of the recession. Of the one million short of contracts registered, only 90,123 were permanent, equivalent to 8.98% of total and 6.3% lower than the same month of 2011.
As for Social Security affiliation, more of the same. There was an average increase of 16,549 members (+0.10%) compared to March. But in the annual comparison, the figures get worse and retreat is now 3.18%. Adjusted figures also worsen, which in this case filter the impact of Easter: from this perspective that there was more job losses, less than 73,000 members in March.
