The first offshore wind farm that opened experimentally in Spain has been influenced by the proximity of the nuclear Vandellòs II (Tarragona). The Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) has given its approval to the installation, promoted by the Generalitat of Catalonia, but it has a number of conditions, such as to ensure it will not affect the detection systems of the plant against a possible air attack from the sea.
Spain, a pioneer in onshore wind, has missed the offshore. While on the water the wind is more constant, low shelf next to the Peninsula makes the installation of these turbines. While in the North Sea depth is small even far from the shore, in Spain the seabed drops sharply separated from the earth.

To start developing the technology, the Institute for Energy Research (IREC) is promoting the project Zefir, against Miami Platja (Tarragona) in collaboration with Acciona, Alstom and Gamesa. This is a very windy area north of the Ebro Delta The first phase seeks to place the mills about 2.3 miles offshore and 40 feet deep, says the CEO of IREC, Antoni Martínez. In the second phase, the most relevant from the standpoint of research, wants to install eight floating wind turbines 30 kilometers off the coast. For Spain, these devices are the most interesting, since they would not be from the coast and mitigate the reluctance of hoteliers, who have complained about similar projects in Cadiz.
UK vetoed coastal mills that interfered with military radar
In the processing had to consult the CSN, as a few miles is the nuclear Vandellòs II. The full CSN approved on April 26 a qualified yes to the project. According to the minutes of the meeting, published on the website of Council on Monday, the wind minipark include a "safety assessment, which are stated the analysis of the potential risks arising from its operation and its possible influence on safety and normal operation of nuclear power plant II. " In particular, requests the IREC to perform an "analysis of potential interference with any physical protection systems in relation to incursions into the airspace of the nuclear power plant II."
James Morton, a consultant specializing in energy, explains that "in the UK wind industry and the Ministry of Defense came to a protocol for marine parks do not interfere with military radar." UK has a huge offshore wind program of 40,000 megawatts. Last January, they announced the testing of a radar-proof wind turbines off the coast of Norkfold, east of England. Until then, had vetoed all parks near military radar interference caused by the blades, as announced in the British ministry. Morton is pleased that the CSN is aware of the new facilities.
IREC sources indicate that comply with the conditions set by the CSN and highlight that the project is outside the radius of 850 meters from the nuclear (another of the Council's conditions).
Martinez said before the publication of the report that CSN had the full cooperation of the nuclear, the only one in Spain which is cooled by sea water:
"The submarine cable passes by making refrigeration plant." The European Investment Bank has selected Zefir as a favorite to receive funding.
