The number of companies and people who went bankrupt during the first quarter of 2012 reached the 2224 and rose by 21.5% compared to the previous year. The figure represents a record of bad debts. The presence of construction companies and property in Bankruptcy Proceedings Statistics released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE) is very relevant: to 31.3% of companies, a total of 612, which went into suspension payments were in this sector.
The number of insolvent companies rose 24.9% between January and March to reach 1958, while the number of people who filed for bankruptcy increased by 83, 10.7%. The year 2011 had been fateful for the number of companies that entered bankruptcy to reach the record figure of 6,755 insolvencies, 13.3% from the previous year.
Depending on the type of bankruptcy that was practiced in the first three months of the year, there were 2,105 voluntary procedures, 22.3% more than the same period last year, 119 necessary, up 9.2%. The amount of regular competitions increased 149.6% while the shortcuts also rose, if 11.7%.

The construction and property development was the most affected, followed by the fields of industry and energy (367, 18.7%) and trade (347, 17.7%).
Catalonia was the region with a greater number of contests during the first quarter with a total of 495. This was followed by Valencia (335), the Community of Madrid (242) and Andalusia (226). At the other extreme are Cantabria, with only 21 declarations of insolvency, La Rioja (23) and Extremadura (27).
67.1% of the competitions stated in this period are in the lower stretch of turnover used by the INE, which includes companies that earn less than two million per year. Insolvent companies in the first quarter of 2012 are mostly limited, 75.3% of the total, and a number of employees ranging from one to nineteen.
