Madrid. (EFE). - Deaths from diseases of the nervous system in 2010 increased 2.9 percent and placed as the fourth cause of death, when was the eighth in 2000.
This is reflected in the statistics of deaths by cause of death, which has made public Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) data for 2010.
The crude death rate stood at 829.2 deaths per 100,000 population, representing a decrease of 1.1 percent over the previous year.
In 2010 there were 382,047 deaths in Spain, 2,866 less than those recorded the previous year. Of these, 183,926 were women (1% less) and 198,121 men (0.5% less).
Circulatory system diseases (responsible for 31.2 per 100 deaths), tumors (28.1) and respiratory system diseases (10.5) remain the three leading causes of death in Spain.
Suicide was, again, the first external cause of death with 3,145 deaths (2,456 men and 689 women). Deaths from traffic accidents (2,327 deaths) continued their downward trend and decreased by 10.1% over 2009.
Continues the upward trend in deaths from tumors (up 2%) while fewer instances due to circulatory diseases (-0.8%) and respiratory (-7%).
Within tumors, those responsible for increased mortality were the bronchial and lung, followed by colon. Cancer was the leading cause of death in men, while women were circulatory diseases.
Causes more deaths among males were external (mainly traffic accidents and suicides). By contrast, deaths caused by diseases of the nervous system and mental disorders were higher in women.
The number of deaths from AIDS / HIV was reduced by 5.4% in 2010 (813 men and 208 women). By age, the leading cause of death in over 79 years were diseases of the circulatory system, while between 5 and 14 were tumors.
Among children 1 to 4 years and 15 to 39, the main cause of death was the group of external causes. By region, the highest rates of deaths per 100,000 population corresponded to Asturias (1203.7), Galicia (1087.1) and Castilla y León (1086.1).
Meanwhile, mortality rates were lower in the Canaries (611.8), Madrid (642.1) and the autonomous city of Melilla (551.3).
