Spain was the country of the European Union (EU) where wages recorded a further contraction in the last quarter of 2012, down 4.3% from a year earlier, compared with an increase of 1.4% in all the Twenty-seven, according to data released today by Eurostat, the European statistical office.
Of the 25 countries for which data are available (left Greece and Portugal), Spain and Slovenia (-1.7%) were the only ones where wages per hour worked were reduced compared with the last three months of 2011. At the other extreme, wages rose 7.6% in Romania, 6.6% in Estonia and 5.8% in Bulgaria, while in the large euro countries did more moderately: France (2 %), Germany (3.3%) and Italy (0.7%).
Linking wages and non-wage costs for companies, the cost of labor in Spain fell 3.4% in the last quarter of 2012 compared to the same period last year. The fall is mainly due to Eurostat sectors called "non-business", which includes, among others, public administration and defense, health and education. In this area, wages in Spain fell 14.1% on-year, leaving the fall in the cost of labor in 11.5%.

Meanwhile, in the field of business (which accounts for the bulk of the economy, including industry, construction and services), salaries and total labor costs rose a slight 0.3% in the country.
Slovenia is the other partner in the EU for which data are available where labor costs declined (-2.1%), although it can virtually cut also made in Greece, for whom the European statistical office has no data date, but in the third quarter where the cost of labor had fallen to 13.3%.
In the euro area as a whole, labor costs rose 1.3% in the last three months of 2012, up from 1.8% yoy in the third quarter of this year, shares that are identical to those of member countries.
