Pension spending in March kept its rate of increase despite the government's decision not to upgrade the performance under inflation and limit the rise this year to 1%. According to data published on Tuesday by the Ministry of Employment, Social Security spent 7.687 million to pay the pensions, which is 4.8% more than the same month of 2012. To settle scores and delay effective retirement age in Spain with a view to extend the working life of the contributors, the Government has already launched the reform of early retirement.
The rise in payroll exceed pension in February, which was 4.7%. Moreover, still above the increase for the full year, which the 2013 Budget should be limited to 4.3%. The increase is because there are more pensioners collecting Social Security and it has increased the average amount of the benefit.
Going down to the detail of the performance, the average pension was 974.30 euros, 3.6% more than last year. For its part, the whole system, including the different types of pension (retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphanhood and family allowances) stood at 852.61 euros per month, representing an increase of 3 2%.
More than half of these benefits, 5,412,950, are for retirement; 2,330,799 for widowhood; 936,087 permanent disability; 299,083 for orphans and 37,668 for families. In addition, 9,016,587 were paid contributory pensions in March, 1.5% higher than a year earlier.
