Rafael Sánchez-Lozano has resigned as CEO of Iberia and board member of IAG with effect "immediately" in full restructuring and adjustment of the workforce, the airline announced today in a statement to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). Sánchez-Lozano, who has decided his departure "by mutual agreement" with the company, he held the position since July 2009 and has faced one of the most turbulent stages of the airline, if not the most complex in recent years. It will be replaced by Luis Gallego, who is currently the CEO of the low cost subsidiary Iberia Express.
The Sanchez-Lozano output occurs at full employment regulation file. The company closed a deal in mid-March with workers to perform the adjustment. Following the intervention of a mediator, agreed the output end 3141 employees, down from the initial figure of 4,800 who ran the company.
Sánchez-Lozano, 56, has not had an easy management of the airline ahead after conducting the merger with British Airways which resulted in IAG, which became the owner of the Spanish. Complications, however, came later as a result of the demands of a tough restructuring matrix in Iberia to end its history of losses. Also, since joining the group, the Spanish company has been diluted and personality, which is more dangerous, has lost ground with a view to expansion in Latin America.
IAG Chief Executive Willie Walsh has thanked Sanchez-Lozano "its important work and commitment to Iberia", company that has led over a "very difficult" in the midst of a deep recession and has initiated the first step important to recovery of the profitability of the airline.
About the new head of Iberia, Walsh said that "has vast experience in various international airlines" and played "a decisive role" as CEO of Iberia Express, in creating an airline that is "a great success" .
