Cyprus deposits of more than 100,000 euros could suffer a 40 percent cut

Finance Minister of Cyprus, Michalis Sarris, confirmed today to the British public broadcaster BBC that the cut applied to deposits in excess of € 100,000 in that country could be around 40%.
In an interview with the said channel, Sarris said that those savers who have less than that amount in their bank deposits "not affected" by the measure.
In contrast, those that exceed 100,000 euros, could see that "about 40%" of their deposits becomes bank stocks, he added.
"The exact percentage has not yet been decided but it will be significant," he said.
The final figure will depend on how you decide the Government of Cyprus to protect pensions.
Sarris also confirmed that Cypriot banks are closed until next Thursday and that the Government has established temporary controls on capital movements to prevent a massive outflow of money abroad once the entities reopen its doors.
According to the minister, these restrictions will "probably a little tighter" in the case of the two largest banks: the Bank of Cyprus and Laiki Bank, and shall continue in force until the banking system "stabilizes".
Once the funds start flowing rescue the European Union (EU), will be "within weeks" to return confidence to the country, he added.
Cyprus banks are closed from Saturday 16 March and since then the only access to cash has been through ATMs, with limitations on the amounts.
