The entry into force of labor reform in February has allowed companies to reduce strongly the money spent on redundancies. According to data published Friday by INE, the average cost per worker layoffs has dropped by 23% in the fourth quarter of 2012 compared to the same period of 2011. The decline is the sharpest recorded since the start of the crisis and confirms that it is becoming cheaper dismiss.
The labor reform, which became operational in the second quarter, generalized the contract with compensation of 33 days per year worked, provided records of employment regulation with 20 days per year and opened the door to collective redundancies in the administration. In the first three months of implementation, the decline in staff costs were set at 12%. In the third quarter, the decline was exacerbated by 17% and, in the final stretch of 2012, reached 23%.

The downward trend in the cost of dismissal has taken place while it was still destroying jobs in Spain, which is now in its sixth consecutive year of rising unemployment. However, while staff adjustments made at the beginning of the problems have been concentrated in temporary, cheaper for companies in case of dismissal, the persistence of the crisis has come to be well ahead of an indefinite number. In this respect it is noteworthy that the largest decrease redundancy costs occurring while leaving the companies were those with permanent contracts, confirming that the first effect of the labor reform has been to lower the dismissal despite it was designed to tackle unemployment and encourage job creation.
Besides the average cost per employee that companies intended to layoffs, also lower the strongly non-wage payments, which recorded a decline of 15.6%. This reduction is explained, added INE "by lower compensation" and other non-wage and compensation payments, small tools, work clothes or recruitment.
Outside section of layoffs, corporate money used to pay the wages of its workers fell by 3.6% at the end of 2012 compared to a year earlier, representing the biggest cut in wages in 17 years. The average, according to the INE survey, down to 1,946 euros. If this amount is in addition to compulsory social security, amounting to 569 euros, labor costs also fell, by 3.2% to an average of € 2598.
In terms of hours worked, working time is reduced by 1%, so the labor cost per hour drops by 2.2%.
