; and the western , central and northern Europe ; with the notable exceptions of Costa Rica , Uruguay , Ghana , the only African - nation , Israel , Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Partial freedom is concentrated in Eastern Europe , both in the south and in the center ; in half of African countries , mostly in Latin America and in other rare cases , such as India , South Korea , Indonesia and the Philippines. The rest of the world overwhelm nations without freedom of press, with a vast domain of northeast Africa and Europe , Middle East and much of Asia.
Of the 197 countries analyzed in the report of Freedom House 2013, made from a series of questions in 23 methodologies , 63 are classified as free - the same number as in 2012 - , 68 partly free - below 70 a year earlier and 66 non - free - two more than in 2012 - . Over the previous year , Libya , South Sudan , Turkey , Ukraine and Zambia fall into the category of not free. It also highlights the degradation in U.S. evaluations - pressure following the revelations of NSA- spying , Central African Republic , Egypt, Greece , Montenegro , Jordan , Kenya or Uganda. At the other end , projecting improvements in African countries such as Mali , Ivory Coast and Togo fruit of various legal developments.
Norway and Sweden are in the first position of the ranking , which this year joins Holland . The three countries are given a rating of 10 out of 100. At the bottom of the list there is no great change and North Korea ( 97) is maintained with the deplorable epithet of being the country with the least press freedom in the world , which shared with Turkmenistan until 2012 , now before last . The latest posts are bridging the countries like Syria, Cuba (which improves colon), Equatorial Guinea , Iran, Belarus and Eritrea. The note of the whole world fell 0.31 points last year compared to the previous .
Declines in the list should be , according to the document , the growing desire of governments - especially in authoritarian states or policy environments - polarization controlling the information content , either through physical intimidation of journalists covering protests or sensitive news , restrictions on the work of foreign journalists , media or major constraints to ' online' . Moreover, freedom was also surrounded by private media owners , especially the coming to political power- that " editorial lines or altered after acquiring an independent media workers fired " for example in Ukraine , Turkey and Venezuela . In fact, the indicators that have suffered a major decline is editorial bias , control over the contents and the physical ability of journalists to cover events.
And, unfortunately , the greater the greater is the risk to protest the reporter . The report mentions attacks on reporters following public protests last year in countries such as Ukraine , Turkey, Egypt , Brazil, Venezuela , Thailand , Jordan and Uganda. Along the same lines , avoid covering Committed Information is one of the major objectives of authoritarian governments . For example , Russia and China threatened or declined to renew the residence visa to prominent foreign journalists ; Egypt arrested or while workers catarí television channel Al Jazeera. At the same time , China also strengthened its Internet censorship platforms - a pattern repeated in Vietnam , Jordan, Sudan and Zambia , and Russia closed the RIA Novosti news agency to substitute another more akin to the thesis of Kremlin.
Paradoxically , Freedom House points out , the decline of press freedom to match 2004 levels in a context of growth of information sources and methods of content delivery . "Despite the openness generated by Internet , transnational media and privatization of emissions , new and old threats to press freedom restrict the ability of journalists to operate and public access to independent information ," said the organization. In fact, a glance at the past reveals that between 2009 and 2013 the press freedom has declined overall 0.47 points , and have been many more countries have worsened than improved. Therefore calls for " renewed efforts " in the fields of research, advocacy and funding for the development of media projects that " are necessary to reinforce positive trends and counter negative " .
