Road transport in Spain emits fewer greenhouse gases. The decline is progressive since 2007, and in 2012 emissions from fuel consumption reached levels similar to those of 1999 and 2000. These data come from a study by the National Energy Commission (CNE), released today, which allows us to estimate the environmental impact of road transport from the oil consumption statistics of this organism and other sources of information.
"We analyzed the most relevant gases, due to their toxicity or environmental impact," explains the CNE in a statement. The study evaluated both greenhouse gases (GHG) Highlights (CO2, CH4 and N2O) that contribute to global warming, such as tropospheric ozone precursor gases (CO, NOx, NMVOC and CH4) that are responsible for photochemical smog - the beret or smog that has detrimental effects to the respiratory tract - and acidifying gases (NOx, NH3 and SO2), also very harmful to health and responsible for acid rain.
For GHGs, the estimate shows a gradual decline since 2007, which contributed to the fall in consumption, incorporating the use of biofuels and increased efficiency of new vehicles with lower emissions, according to the press release CNE.
CO2 emissions are closely linked to the country's economic activity. The graphs show how includes work from 2007 down conventional fuel consumption and, in parallel, CO2 emissions fall into the atmosphere.
The reduction of gas emissions of tropospheric ozone precursors has been "drastically" since the nineties, and responds to the installation of catalytic converters in vehicles and sensors to measure the wealth of combustion, which can reduce CO emissions significantly and NOx. "The ban on the sale of leaded gasoline in Spain since 2001 has favored the reduction of NMVOC," says the study.
In regard to acidifying gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), the work speaks of a "dramatic decline" since 1994 due to "the improvement of fuel quality, which limits the sulfur content, which disappears of petrol and diesel since 2009 ":" In 2012 virtually disappear SO2 emissions related to transportation, "he adds.
Road transport accounts for 32% of total final energy consumed in Spain and petroleum products still account for more than 80% of the energy used in this sector. The 22.4% of the emissions of greenhouse gases come from road transport, according to data provided in the report.
