Brussels EP 29 MAY 2013 - 21:50 CET
The European Commission will launch infringement proceedings tomorrow against Spain for not accepting public hospitals in tourist areas the EHIC and community force patients to pay for treatments that are free for Spanish, according to Europa Press reported sources Community .
The Brussels record growth is the result of number of complaints received about Spanish public hospitals that refuse to treat citizens with EHIC and instead require travel insurance and credit card.
Hospital care in Spain is free broadly in Spain and the European Health Insurance Card entitles its holder to be treated the same way as a Spanish citizen, according to the Commission highlights.
However, some Spanish hospitals patients erroneously reported that his health card is invalid if they have travel insurance, according to complaints received by Brussels. In other cases, patients who believed they were being treated based on their health card later discovered that the bill will be sent to your insurance company.
The EU executive believes that with this performance, hospitals are denying to European health card holders access to public health in the same conditions as Spanish and only offered private treatment. The high cost of this treatment is billed to insurance companies or, increasingly, to the patients themselves.
Insurance companies have further informed Brussels that in most cases no travel insurance private health cover. The Commission has been negotiating with the Spanish authorities about this problem since 2010. Spanish authorities have indicated to the EU executive that have taken steps to solve it, but the number of complaints is increasing.
Therefore, Brussels has decided to send a letter of formal notice, the first stage of the infringement procedure. If within two months the Spanish authorities do not take action, the EU executive will formally legal reform and could end up taking the case before the Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
