A total of 32,242 women were battered in 2011, according to the Central Registry for the protection of these women published Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), and in addition contained 7,744 victims of domestic violence. The statistics include criminal proceedings that were then being investigated and were enrolled in this record over that year. The data also reveal that half of the victims of male violence (50.8%) are between 25 and 39.
Thus, rates of victims in relation to the total population of women are higher in the age group of 20-24 years (320 victims per 100,000 women), followed by battered aged between 25 and 29 years (314) . In addition, the agency indicates that 571 women who were abused by their partners or former partners, were less than 18 years.
As for the origin of the victims, nearly two out of three battered were born in Spain (64.2%). Of the foreign, most came from America (5,506), followed by Europe (3935), Africa (1,888) and Asia Pacific (200).
INE data indicate that the communities in which there was a greater number of victims were Andalusia (7780), Valencia (4438), Madrid (4095) and Catalonia (3552). In 28.4% of cases, the victim was married to her abuser while 24% were domestic partner, ex-girlfriend (10.7%) or former spouse (7.2%).
