A drone attack has killed seven people, including Wali ur-Rehman, the number two Taliban of North Waziristan, western Pakistan, according to sources have said Pakistani security bodies. Four other people were wounded during the attack in the town of Chashma, three kilometers from Miranshah, the capital of the region. Again according to these sources, the drone, or drone, launched two rockets at an adobe house.
It is the first major attack since Barack Obama drones on day 23 announced that it would increase restrictions on the use of drones, and the first use of drones in Pakistan since the elections last May 11, where he was one of the campaign themes. The winner, Nawaz Sharif, proposed "to talk to our American friends" to stop the attacks.
Wali ur-Rehman was well positioned to succeed Hakimullah Mehsud, the leader of the Taliban movement in Afghanistan, an organization allied but separate from the Afghan Taliban. North Waziristan, bordering Afghanistan, is one of the regions where Islamist militants are strongest. The spokesman of the Taliban movement has not spoken about the attack, preferring not to comment for lack of "confirmed reports".
The Pakistani government has not confirmed the death of Rehman, but has returned to protest against the use of drones. "Our government's position has always been that the attacks are counterproductive, involving the loss of innocent lives, have implications humanitarian and human rights and violate the principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity and international law".
