Cheaper, more readily available and unrestricted. These are some of the causes behind the trend in increased use of emerging drugs (uncontrolled psychoactive substances), compared to those regulated as cannabis or cocaine. The Ministry of Health has focused this time on the study of the younger population with the publication of a report that that 3.5% of Spanish students aged 14 to 18 years (76,000 youth) are untested sometime in life. Another favorite, hallucinogenic mushrooms topping the list (2.1% used the last year), followed by ketamine (an anesthetic used as an alternative to ecstasy) and spice (synthetic blend of herbs that mimic the effects of cannabis).
They accumulate more experience than them in this area (4.7% vs 2.4%), and consumption is associated with making nightlife clubs and parties, where often fall into the poly (mixing with other drugs such as alcohol). However, in recent years Health has seen an increase in solo consumers looking for new sensations.
The study, the first carried out in Spain and throughout Europe, analyzes nine psychoactive substances such as methamphetamine, mephedrone (fertilizer), calls the spice or magic mushrooms. But there are many more. There are countless derivatives created from adulterated substances that cause other and also sit on the sidelines of regulation. Also they are not included in the lists of drugs, and that sometimes it is disguised products such as bath salts, plant food or incense, which are given a different use for which they were manufactured. Nuria Espí, delegate of the National Drug Plan, risk alert for these drugs, since "final composition is unknown and the consequences" of experimentation.
For now, the volume of consumption is not "worrying" said Espi, compared with other classical drugs such as cocaine, which makes Spain the second largest consumer (making 2.7%), according to the annual report European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction. But keep in mind that these substances are being taken at an early age, added the delegate of the NDP.
The effects produced are as diverse as its origin and composition, but can be differentiated by psychostimulants such as amphetamine derivatives (MDMA), depressants (spice) and hallucinogens (nexus, mushrooms). An abusive consumption and prolonged in time can trigger long-term damaging effects, including Magi Farré, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and one of the experts who wrote the report, lists some as memory impairment , hyperactivity of the central nervous system cardiovascular impact possible psychiatric problems, and even death. "From the buzz to severe intoxication there is a very small margin," he assured Farré, who works at the Research Institute Hospital del Mar in Barcelona.
The report also notes that under the influence of these substances can develop aggressive and risky behaviors, such as reckless driving or unprotected sex. Information that does not seem to reach young consumers: "Between 40% and 50% of respondents know the specific risks of consuming substances" can be read in the study.
Easy access them through the Internet, which plays an important role in the promotion, distribution and sale of these substances and that "beyond the control of governments," said Espi. The European Union has identified up to 600 pages on the Web where you can buy these substances, but "surely be thousands", said Manuel Sanchis, internal medicine specialist and member of the Clinical Committee of experts who participated in the report.
