The Government and Competition services have put the spotlight on the oil companies on suspicion they agree prices. This alleged policy is noted in fuel prices before taxes, which is where they have capacity to decide, and in comparison with the prices of European neighbors. In this last section, the price of gasoline 95 in Spain is well above the average in the eurozone despite the raw material, oil, is the same for everyone. Moreover, the average price of a liter of this fuel is only surpassed by Malta, according to the latest data from the EU Oil Bulletin.
The price of gasoline has all of May and average price up to 27th of this month, according to EU data, was 72.3 cents per liter before tax. The diesel fuel was 74.4 cents. Against the rest of the eurozone, the price in Spain of 95 unleaded is surpassed only by Malta, where it costs 76.4 cents, while the average of the countries that share the euro is at 68.1 euros. For diesel, the price before tax is 74.4 cents, the Spanish case is not so remarkable, but remains above average. Specifically, 3.2 cents more.
Once incorporated taxes, however, the situation changes. In the last week of May, the average price of a liter of petrol was 1,437 euros, compared to 1,412 the previous week, while diesel has increased from 1.329 to 1.348 euros. Given these prices, the average gasoline and diesel in the euro zone has been 1,612 and 1,415 euros, respectively.
At these prices, fill an average fuel tank is a user payment for 71.85 euros (70.6 last week) and diesel from 67.4 euros (66.4 euros last week).
However, perhaps the final price differential with the rest of the eurozone has an expiration date on the decision of Brussels. The European Commission has included among its recommendations to the Government of Mariano Rajoy to consider a rise in environmental taxes, especially those levied on fuels.
