Antitrust regulators in the European Union are seeking information on distribution agreements with Apple iPhone mobile telecommunications operators. The goal is to determine if they can be aimed at shutting out rival manufacturers.
In a nine-page questionnaire sent to mobile telecommunications companies last Friday, the European Commission reports that such behavior may violate EU antitrust rules.
The survey comes after complaints against Apple operating subsidies for their smartphones and tablets. These questionnaires are prior to determining whether to formally open a case or not.
"The Commission has information indicating that Apple and mobile network operators have closed distribution agreements, which can potentially lead to foreclosure of other smartphone makers," the questionnaire.
Operators are asked if Apple has forced them to buy a minimum volume of iPhones, provide preferential treatment to establish a certain level of subsidies and ensure that Apple receives the same or better deals than rivals. Regulators are also interested in knowing if Apple restricts companies to use the iPhone 5 on their 4G/LTE networks. The deadline for responses is June 17.
European and U.S. traders usually pay large subsidies to manufacturers of smartphones like Apple. Customers get discounts on these devices in exchange for signing a two-year contract, a key source of revenue for operators.
Smartphones accounted for 49.3% of mobile phones sold worldwide in the first quarter, according to Gartner.
