The failure of the unmanned aircraft project (drone) Euro Hawk military has put the German defense minister, Thomas de Maizière Christian Democrat, in serious trouble by the waste of hundreds of millions of public euros. Although the chancellor, Angela Merkel, said Wednesday through a spokesman his "full confidence" in his party colleague, De Maizière through the most delicate situation of his political career, trying to save with the approval of the Federal Court of Auditors. The drone would be the first major unmanned aircraft with German technology, but failed to obtain flying license for production. Defense decided to stop the project to avoid further expense. Social Opposition accuses De Maizière eyes being closed for two years to the problems presented by the flagship project of his ministry, until it has been forced to cancel to stop the budgetary bleeding. Defense speaks of 562 million euros invested so far, but the opposition believes that the fiasco could cost nearly double that amount.
This concern is added doubts about the ground surveillance project of the Atlantic Alliance, which will drone Global Hawk, Euro Hawk analogous to the Germans. The project involves Germany, USA, Italy, Norway and nine other NATO members. It appears that these drones of the Alliance have similar problems to obtain flying license in Germany, with the consequent rise in the program.
The Euro Hawk is a genius 40-meter wingspan and more than 8 tons military intelligence systems and recognition. Its development was partitioned between Cassidian, a subsidiary of the Munich-based European aerospace giant EADS, Northrop Grumman and California. U.S. housing come and flight technology German drone, similar to those of the machine of NATO Global Hawk. Sensors and recognition systems were developed by Cassidian, who also participated in the development of the Eurofighter or Spanish drone Atlante, much smaller than the German.
At EADS does not want to hear about the problems of the Euro Hawk. The tremendous contraption not licensing of flight because it lacks a warning system crashes. It is a monumental failure for such an ambitious project, which could have been corrected when first developed 10 years ago. According to research from the Frankfurter Allgemeine, and in 2004 came warnings of air safety authorities. In late 2011, conclude the reporters, it was already obvious that the drone tune for German airspace would cost an additional € 500 million. But the project has continued until last week. Neither the companies involved nor the Armed Forces support responsibilities.
Dirk Erat, Cassidian spokesman said yesterday that the sensors developed for the Euro Hawk cost just over 250 million euros and will be used in other equipment of the Luftwaffe (Air Force) German. Probably in unmanned military aircraft manufactured by Airbus, another subsidiary of EADS. The multinational European military and civil aviation will not answer for the failure of the ambitious plan. Pay the taxpayer.
In May 2011, just months after the resignation in disgrace of plagiarism in the PhD of his predecessor Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, the new minister De Maizière commissioned the construction of three ships of recognition technology similar to that developed for the drone. Social Defense expert Hans Peter Bertels considers that the measure "raises suspicions that the cancellation was intended to compensate the Euro Hawk". In addition, the ministry hid the problems of the inaugural flight of a prototype of the drone, which in July 2011 lost contact with the control satellites while crossing the Atlantic flying at 20,000 meters and 500 kilometers per hour.
In Merkel mouth the words "full confidence" is more ominous than reassuring. With all the "trust" of Merkel Zu Guttenberg resigned on plagiarist, Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen, in 2012, or Education, Annette Schavan, this year. De Maizière, announced yesterday that the Court of Auditors has until early June to study the loss of your project.
