The number of suicides in Spain increased in 2012 to 3,539 cases. The figure, 11.3% higher than the previous year, is the largest ever recorded in the country since 2004 ( 3,507 were then) , according to recent data on deaths by cause of death released this morning by the Institute Institute of Statistics (INE ) returning to pick up this phenomenon as the leading cause of unnatural death over accidents . The study also includes a total increase in deaths - both natural causes such as external - causes 15,039 cases. In total , in 2012 402,950 people died in Spain , 3.9% more than in 2011 .
Ending own life was a much more widespread among men than among women . Of the 3,539 cases in 2012 , 2,724 were men compared to 815 women who died for this cause. The figure is especially pronounced in the age group ranging from 25 to 34. According to the INE , suicide was the second leading cause of death behind only the tumors in that range.

With these data , the rate of suicides per 100,000 population in Spain is 7.6 ( in 2011 it was 6.2 , according to the OECD), and other approaches to neighboring countries with higher figures as United Kingdom ( 6.5 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2011), Portugal ( 8.5) , the Netherlands ( 9.5) and Germany (10.8) , but still far from the rates triggered South Korea (33, 3) or Japan (20.9) .
However, when viewed in perspective is that the number of suicides is between 3,000 and 3,500 over 10 years . What has happened is that against a declining rate since 2008 , from that year increases again .
Does this mean that the economic crisis has involved an increase in the number of suicides ? No , according to Santiago Durán- Sindreu psychiatrist responsible for Suicide Prevention Plan of the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona. "There is a coincidence in time between the two, but we can not say that there is a causal relationship , that would be bold ."
Duran - Sindreu considers the rate increase is "not alarming" because the numbers do not stop moving at a similar rate to what it was before the fall of the last few years . But it results in a " striking " increase and believes that it is an issue that should pay attention to the health authorities.
Psychiatrist calls for the implementation of a plan for suicide prevention, as they already have other EU countries or regions such as Catalonia, which introduced a specific program for this purpose in December called Suicide Risk Code.
Moreover, diseases of the circulatory system (30.3 % ) tumors (27.5%) and respiratory diseases (11.7% ) were , as every year, the leading causes of death. The report highlights a significant rebound in the latter of 12.1 % over the previous year as well as mental and behavioral disorders (including Alzheimer's ) 12.2% , diseases that typically affect older people .
The cause , according to the INE, would the influenza epidemic of 2011-2012 season that had its peak incidence in February 2012 . That peak , the study found that deaths caused by respiratory and mental illness in February and March shoot 53.6% and 41.2% compared to the same months of 2011. That special incidence of influenza in those months generated a significant increase in mortality from pneumonia , bronchitis , emphysema ...
Specific pathologies caused more deaths were ischemic heart (heart attack, angina .. ) but with a minimum decrease of 0.2 % over the previous year. It was followed by cerebrovascular disease (stroke, aneurysm ... ) . The first were the leading cause of death among men and the second among women . The deadliest tumors were bronchial and lung , followed by colon cancer . Among women, the tumor was caused more deaths than breast, but declined by 0.4 % over the previous year.
The data so outrageous deaths from diseases of the respiratory system does not seem so when viewed in perspective. "Always grow above average ," said José Miguel Rodríguez González -Moro , Head of Institutional Relations of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery ( Separ ) . Rodriguez claims that this has two causes. On the one hand , " we are still suffering the effects of the smoking epidemic 20 years ago, with smoking rates above 40 %. Unlike cardiovascular disease, damage snuff in the lungs lasts much longer , up to 30 years " . Hence I have lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in people who quit smoking 15 years ago , explains .
The other is the continuous increase of pneumonia . " We have a very aging population, and respiratory infections , which is the gateway , is what brings especially hospitals. Few people die from Alzheimer's, but from an infection acquired having Alzheimer's," he says. "Infections attack people with other underlying diseases ."
