The Asco I nuclear plant (Tarragona) has reduced its power in a non-scheduled by more than 20% due to the "avalanche of algae in the cooling channel of the plant" by the flood caused by Endesa Ebro to ensure navigability of the river, as reported by the Nuclear Safety Council.
The nuclear uses the Ebro flow to cool but to "get the algae in the channel could partially clog the water circulation system that cools the condenser of the steam turbine." Given that possibility, the plant has decided to manually reduce the reactor power "to prevent possible transients caused by the reduced cooling."
The event has been rated as level 0, the lowest possible without risk to workers, the public or the environment.
According to Red Electrica of Spain, the nuclear power operating at 10.30 was 4,384 megawatts, and 50 minutes later was of 3,840, by the fall of Asco.
In 2006, the heatwave forced to halt the nuclear Garoña (Burgos) because the water from the Ebro which refrigeration was too hot.
