Schäuble and Geithner call for joint efforts to stabilize the European economy

Both politicians stressed the need to work "coordinated" in favor of a stabilization of public finances and reducing macroeconomic imbalances, according to a joint statement issued after the meeting on the German island of Sylt.  The meeting between Schäuble and Geithner described as "informal meeting" on both sides, took place amid multilateral efforts to defuse the critical situation in the euro area.  The German Minister and Secretary of the Treasury reaffirmed their confidence in the efforts being undertaken by both Spain and Italy, with its program of reforms and pledged to continue working, both the U.S. and Germany, to achieve stabilization of the economy global.  After meeting with Schäuble, Geithner will meet this Monday, the president of the European Central Bank (ECB), Mario Draghi, in Frankfurt
