The entry into force of health co-payment system has been one of the main factors that have led to the rise in inflation in July, which has risen three tenths to 2.2% from the same month of 2011. After two months without changes, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached its highest level and the year, according to advance data on price developments in Spain has today published National Statistics Institute (INE). The Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which measures changes in prices by the same method in all euro area countries, increased four tenths off the June rate to 2.2%. The July data reduces the differential with other countries in the region, which hampers Spanish exports.
The forecasts for the coming months are not encouraging: the increase in VAT and the consequent higher cost of electricity and gas bills, among others, could push inflation to a new annual record.
