More than 7 million people die worldwide each year because of pollution either outside or inside the home, which makes pollution in the main environmental risk to health. This was denounced today the World Health Organization (WHO ) presented the latest statistics on pollution, which show that one in eight deaths worldwide are related to exposure to contaminated environments.
"The numbers are striking , are dramatic. Y is a problem that affects everyone, both developing and developed countries. But having them as a positive first step , because it gives us the knowledge to act and solve the problem ," said press conference in Maria Neira , director of the Department of Public Health and Environment of WHO.
Today's figures come from global mortality statistics in 2012, and before these , recent data that had the UN health agency , dating from 2008 , showed a number of deaths related to environmental pollution 3 5 million , exactly half of the disclosed now .
Neira specified , however , not to be understood that in six years the cases have doubled , but new methodology and new technology have permitted a more accurate picture of the situation radiography. Of the 7 million deaths , 3.7 have because the external environmental pollution, and 4.3 are due to domestic household pollution , caused mainly by combustion for cooking with wood, coal or biomass .
Since many people are exposed to both indoor and outdoor pollution , estimates of deaths can not be added , and the estimated total pollution deaths rounded to 7 million. Studies have revealed that eighty percent of diseases caused by outdoor air pollution are cardiovascular disease : forty percent are heart attacks and another forty percent are strokes .
The remaining 20 percent of the diseases caused by external contamination is made : chronic lung conditions (11 %), lung cancer ( 6%), and acute respiratory infections in children ( 3%). With regard to pollution in homes, causing major ailments are: stroke (34 %), heart attacks (26 % ) , chronic pulmonary diseases ( 22%), acute respiratory infections in children ( 12%) , and lung cancer (6 % ) .
"Excessive pollution is often unsustainable because public policies in transport, energy , industry and waste management . In many cases , healthier strategies will also be more economical in the long term through savings in health care costs and in improving the environment , "he said , in turn , Carlos Dora, coordinator of WHO Public Health .
Of the 3.7 million deaths from external pollution, 88 percent of deaths occur in middle or low income , accounting for 82 percent of the world population. The regions of the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia are suffering more cases , with 1.67 million deaths and 936,000 deaths respectively. 236,000 Other deaths occurred in the Eastern Mediterranean , 200,000 in Europe, 176,000 in Africa , and 58,000 in the Americas. The other deaths occurred in rich countries in Europe (280,000 ), Americas ( 94,000) , Western Pacific ( 67,000 ) and Eastern Mediterranean ( 14,000) .
With respect to the internal pollution of households , almost all of the deaths occurred in low and middle income , and only 20,000 in rich nations. The regions of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific were the most deaths counted , 1.69 and 1.62 million respectively. Another 600,000 deaths occurred in Africa , 200,000 in the Eastern Mediterranean , 99,000 in Europe and 81,000 in the Americas. For now , WHO has no data contamination cities, but is working on a report thereon , to be made public in the coming months.
