Serafin Castilian, Valencian Government adviser, warned in a recent interview with the country that this year, air and land resources to fight fires in the region were the same as last year. However, the budget has dropped by more than 15 million euros compared to 2011, from 110 million to about 95, representing a reduction of 13.6%. "We are optimizing to maximize resources," said Castilian, "and strengthening the prevention and suppression."
This "boost" is embodied essentially in the arrangement of six water tanks to quell any outbreak of fire. Moreover, as reported by the Interior, 76 agents has gone to 90, and 121 units of prevention have gone to 122, with 69 points and 220 forest observatories monitoring.
But the total number of people working in the firefighting community has been reduced from 11,700 to 11,500. The average number of air travel has grown from 23 to 22. Vehicles continue to exceed 1,000 units and emergency crews remain at 43.
The cuts do not affect prevention policies of the Government, which prohibits the burning of June 1 to September 30 and who insists on raising awareness as the best method to avoid disaster. Castilian concluded the interview, made on 23 June with an almost prescient sentence: "We have increased surveillance in the days and areas of highest risk, but the summer can be difficult."
