Why come to Spain, Mr. Ban-Ki-Moon?
By: Gonzalo Fanjul | April 4, 2013
In current times, organize a summit in Spain on cooperation and development is something like going to North Korea to discuss pacifism and human rights: very rare. So striking that the Secretary General of the UN has come to talk about the problems of hunger just to our country, where the government has volatilized the development aid system as the magician Copperfield takes away a bus. Is it possible that this man not heard that here only talks about Barcenas and the Pope? The mystery is served.
Always outstanding of interest to our readers, this blog has decided to venture some theories that explain the reasons for Ban Ki Moon. Hang on, because our speculations will unseat Eros Blog today and very Comidista:.
- Theory A: An attack of melancholy. Spain organized in 2009 similar summit to address the crisis of food prices and its devastating impact on the levels of hunger. That meeting will be remembered by the almost complete futility of their results, but it is possible that the UN bigwigs llevasen fond memories of the menu. That, or who want to travel to the Roaring 80's, which is the time when the Spanish aid was last seen in the level at which the left Cristobal Montoro (OECD data published yesterday).
- Theory B: These scouts. The UN meeting comes at full international debate on the future of the Millennium Development Goals, which expire in 2015. One of the core issues of the new agenda is the inequality as an obstacle determining the progress and welfare of much of the planet. And that to Spain not coughing anyone: in a few years we have climbed many of the ranking of inequality that the European league already appears to us amateurs. In other words, it is possible that the UN is not interested in us as a donor, but as imminent recipient of international aid. We have here the IMF and the UNDP is just the next step.
- Theory C (most likely): Do not find out anything. It is possible that the UN wants to use the occasion to give a boost to the ailing Spanish Cooperation, warning the Government that, by smoking aid programs (remember: 0.15% of GDP in 2012), also smoked accumulated prestige and influence in many countries and international organizations. If so, they should not tell the President Rajoy abruptly. Rather it will cost the good man not to laugh talking about the importance of international aid at the close of the summit.
Anyway, the visit of Ban Ki Moon and other UN directors will help us gauge the perspective of our own problems. Maybe explain to Anthony Lake's hear what plans to prevent death UNICEF 29,000 children daily. Or Graziano da Silva, director of FAO, tell us what to do Africa to launch the green revolution that will allow you to feed the 200 million hungry that accumulate to 14 miles of our beaches.
What is certain is that all this will leave the Party as cold as you found it. Useless to point out that other crisis countries cut their aid, but less, or that the poor are not an excuse here because they too have been cornered against banks and evaders. The decision is made, at least for now. So it would be desirable that the next such summit organized in the most sensitive environments governments. The only thing missing yesterday after the data is to see our ministers slapping the back of the UN Secretary General at the entrance of the cocktail.
