The Catalan government today reiterated that "studying" the implementation of a tax on homes that are empty, but did not clarify when it will come into force or how it will be applied. What has explained this morning in Parliament by the Minister of Planning and Sustainability, Santi Vila, is that the rate in any case will have a "vocation tax collection" and will apply to homes with more than two years and not be empty individual property.
Vila has reiterated that the only tax levied on banks and their property, not citizens who have an empty property. He also said that there will be exceptions, such as council flats and those who depend on the municipalities. Republican Left CiU has claimed that this tax is not delayed and implemented in an "urgent" to comply and one of the points of agreement signed by both parties legislature.
The purpose of this tax is to stimulate the rental market, to be put on the market 79,000 new flooring gaps in Catalonia. Ten thousand of them are owned by banks.
