IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said in an interview broadcast today the need for the euro zone go "beyond" in areas such as banking union and move towards fiscal consolidation, although in some cases "to a more moderate pace ".
In the euro zone, "we need to go further in some areas and reforms, such as the banking union, which is critical to avoid or prevent situations like the one that occurred in Cyprus," Lagarde said the Mexican newspaper El Universal.
"They also need to continue the process of fiscal consolidation, although in some cases to a more moderate pace, and structural reforms to liberalize certain markets where growth has shrunk," Lagarde said, without specifying to which European countries concerned.
According to the head of the IMF (International Monetary Fund), the countries of the euro zone and Japan are part of a group of countries "that clearly lagging behind."
"We are seeing some recovery and growth. A little more, but not much more than that recorded last year," he added, saying that the world economy is in a recovery process, "three-speed".
One of them is the emerging economy countries, other nations like the United States, Switzerland and Sweden, which are meeting or are in the process of resolving a "bad situation" in sectors such as finance, and, thirdly, the euro area and Japan.
"We need more cooperation between different nations and different groups," he added.
In emerging economies said they would have to seize the current positive situation "to rebuild and protect against potential crises, and in the case of the United States there is" obvious need "medium term resolve your tax problem.
In the interview, Lagarde praised the reforms undertaken by the Mexican government of Enrique Peña Nieto in sectors such as education, telecommunications, energy and tax some more to be approved and submitted to Parliament.
"I am very impressed by the scope and breadth of the reforms that the Government of Mexico has set out on," said the managing director of the IMF in the interview, done at Washington on the eve of the spring meeting of the agency and the Bank World, which takes place this week.
