The IMF included in its report a study on the level of indebtedness of large listed companies in Europe and identifies it as one of the obstacles to economic recovery in the countries of the south. "The indebtedness of listed companies on the periphery of the euro area is considerable, equivalent to a fifth of the outstanding debt," the Fund.
Spain and Portugal stops out particularly badly in this respect and they defile the bank that has lent money to companies, which calls for "continued vigilance of supervisors on bank asset quality," said the report. The Spanish case is marked by property developers whose toxic loans have gone largely to the bad bank, or asset management-driven by the government to stabilize the financial system.
Debt becomes unsustainable when a company fails to generate the cash flow necessary to maintain a controlled level liabilities. For example, the debt burden on the resources of the companies studied in Spain stood at 42%, a level surpassed by Portugal (47%), but far from France (27%), Germany (30%), Ireland (30%) and Italy (35%).
