An Iranian official source has told Reuters that the earthquake may have caused hundreds of deaths

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has shaken Tuesday southeastern Iran and felt in neighboring countries like Pakistan and India, has informed the United States Geological Survey (USGS for its acronym in English).

An Iranian official source has told Reuters that the earthquake may have caused hundreds of deaths. "It was the largest earthquake in Iran in 40 years and hundreds of deaths expected," he said.

The state television announced that killed at least 40 people, although this has not been confirmed by authorities. According to the Fars agency, the city of Saravan (60,000 inhabitants), near the earthquake's epicenter, suffered no major damage.

The quake struck at 11h44 (Spanish time) in Sistan-Baluchistan province, a mountainous and desert near Iran's border with Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to the USGS.

Some shook tall buildings in the capital of India, New Delhi, creating scenes of panic in the streets, according to witnesses cited by Reuters. Properties of Qatar and Dubai have also had to be evacuated.

The Russian company that built Iran's only nuclear power plant in Bushehr, Persian west of the country, said that the plant has not suffered any damage.

On 9 April, Iran recorded another earthquake of 6.1 degrees on the Richter scale shook Buhehr province in southern Afghanistan, which produced about 37 dead and nearly a thousand injured.
