The Spanish left 4,000 million last year on online gaming, as estimated by the Secretary of State for Finance, Michael Ferré, from the data of the last two quarters of 2012, when they were in effect the new licenses to operate in the sector.
During the inauguration of the First Forum Spanish Responsible Gaming, Ferré has indicated that in the fourth quarter of 2012 was played 1,300 million in this type of online games, 24% more than in the third quarter. From these data, we estimated that the overall figure that moved the sector last year ranged from 4,000 to 5,000 million euros. The European Community has been estimated that by 2015 will be played at the junction 13,000 million euros annually on the Internet.
Regarding the number of players, the Secretary of State has indicated that, to March 20, 2013, there were 1,162,000 registered players, compared to 1.01 million recorded at the end of last year.
Given these forecasts, Ferré has indicated that online gambling is "an important economic activity" that may have "a positive effect" in the Spanish economy. However, and although he has stressed that it is a legal leisure activity, noted that it is also true that implies "certain risk factors that make it different" to other leisure activities for vulnerable groups such as minors or people with pathological gambling.
Therefore, he advocated "self sector itself" to promote initiatives that ensure the protection of these vulnerable groups. As explained Ferré, these mechanisms bring "benefits to the operators themselves", as it will help ward off "any possible stigma" that can have the game for these risks. Ferré reported that so far the Government has withdrawn from the network to 80 operators who were operating without a license.
