Spanish exports of textiles and clothing rose 8.9% in 2012 to 10.423 million euros, representing a new record, while imports fell 7.8% and the trade deficit narrowed by 39 % to 3,100 million reported Intertextile Council.
The company has attributed these figures to more dynamic foreign markets, in contrast to the weak domestic demand in the Spanish market, stated in a statement Monday.
Foreign sales of clothing represent more than two thirds of total exports, and have increased over 13% compared to 2011.
In absolute terms, the main customers of Spanish exports in 2012 were France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Morocco and the United Kingdom, accounting for half of foreign sales.
Europe remains the main destination of Spanish exports to more than 65% of the total, although it is noteworthy increases in markets such as Latin America (+15%), Asia (+17%) and North America (+24%) and in European countries outside the EU, among which Russia, an increase of 19%.
Regarding imports, Asian products continue to lead (47% of total imports), with China as the main supplier (24% of total), followed by Turkey, Italy, Bangladesh and Morocco, which together account for almost 60% of total imports.
Most countries have reduced their presence in the Spanish market, except Bangladesh, which is the fourth global supplier. The Spanish Intertextile Council, composed of seven sectoral associations, is the nodal agency and largest independent representation of the textile industry. It represents more than 9,000 companies in the field of textiles and clothing directly employing 140,000 people and reported annual sales of 11,000 million euros.
