The Quiet American is a 2002 film adaptation of Graham Greene's bestselling novel of the same name. It was directed by Phillip Noyce and starred Michael Caine, Brendan Fraser, and Do Thi Hai Yen.
The 2002 version of The Quiet American, in contrast to the 1958 version, depicted Greene's original ending and treatment of the principal American character, Pyle. Like the novel, the film illustrates Pyle's moral culpability in arranging terrorist actions aimed at the French colonial government and the Viet Minh. Going beyond Greene's original work, the film used a montage ending with superimposed images of American soldiers from the intervening decades of the Vietnam War.
Miramax had paid $5.5 million for the rights to distribute the film in North America and some other territories,[1] and this film went on to gross US$12.9 million in limited theatrical release in the United States. Michael Caine was nominated for the Oscar as Best Actor.


Plot[edit]

Set in 1952 in Saigon, Vietnam, toward the end of the French war against the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (1945-1954), on one level The Quiet American is a love story about the triangle that develops between Thomas Fowler, a British journalist in his fifties; a young American idealist, supposedly an aid worker, named Alden Pyle; and Phuong, a Vietnamese woman. On another level it is also about the growing American involvement that led to the full-scale American war in Vietnam.
Thomas Fowler (Michael Caine), who narrates the story, is involved in the war only as a reporter, an unengaged observer, apart from one crucial event. Pyle (Brendan Fraser), who represents America and its policies in Vietnam, is a CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) operative sent to steer the war according to America’s interests, and is passionately devoted to the ideas of York Harding, an American foreign policy theorist who said that what Vietnam needed was a "third force" to take the place of both the colonialists and the Vietnamese rebels and restore order. This supposedly anti-colonialist and anti-communist force was plainly meant to be America, and so Pyle sets about creating a "Third Force" against the Viet Minh by using a Vietnamese splinter group headed by corrupt militia leader General Thé (based on the actual Trinh Minh The). His arming of Thé's militia with American weaponry leads to a series of terrorist bombings in Saigon. These bombings, dishonestly blamed on the Communists in order to further American outrage, kill a number of innocent people, including women and children.
Meanwhile, Pyle has stolen Fowler's Vietnamese mistress Phuong (Do Thi Hai Yen), promising her marriage and security. When Fowler finds out about Pyle's involvement in the bombings, he takes one definitive action to seal all of their fates. He indirectly agrees to let his assistant, Hinh (Tzi Ma), and his Communist cohorts confront Pyle; when Pyle tries to flee, Hinh fatally stabs him. Phuong subsequently returns to Fowler, and while the local French police commander (Rade Šerbedžija) suspects Fowler's role in Pyle's murder, he has no evidence and does not pursue the matter.

Es la segunda versión cinematográfica de la novela, tras la versión de 1958 dirigida por Joseph Leo Mankiewicz, El americano impasible.
Michael Caine fue nominado al Oscar al mejor actor por su interpretación.


Argumento[editar]

Thomas Fowler (Michael Caine), periodista británico enviado a la Indochina francesa que cuenta con la ayuda de [Quang Hai] en las tareas informativas, tiene como amante a la bailarina vietnamita Phuong (Đỗ Thị Hải Yến). Ambos amantes conocen al presunto médico en misión humanitaria Alden Pyle (Brendan Fraser), que en realidad es un activista infiltrado de USA para evitar que, ante la previsible derrota francesa, el territorio caiga en manos comunistas. Lo imprevisible de la situación es que el viejo Thomas y el americano Pyle se conviertan en rivales amorosos por mor de la vietnamita. Las incursiones comunista en el norte de la colonia obligan al periodista británico a buscar información con líderes que desean sustituir a los franceses para enviar la corresponsalía a Londres. Cuando estalla un coche bomba en el centro de Saigón con pérdidas de vida humana y se descubre posteriormente que ha sido Pyle el inductor, las relaciones entre el periodista y el médico americano empieza a cambiar hasta el punto de que es precisamente Thomas el que pasa información a su ayudante, que era comunista, para que su competidor amoroso sea asesinado por los compañeros de su ayudante que quieren evitar a toda costa la llegada de material químico para la fabricación de bombas.
Ésta es una versión del film homónimo de Mankiewicz (1958), basada en la novela del mismo nombre de Graham Greene. El ambiente en el que se desenvuelve la cinta es la guerra colonial contra Francia en la antigüa Indochina [1948-54], que terminó en una terrible derrota francesa en 1954. La cinta presenta un duelo actoral entre el desengañado periodista británico y un desconocido Brendan Fraser, activista americano, que sostiene la teoría de que el fin justifica los medos a la vista de lo que va a ocurrir en la guerra colonial vietnamita. Buena fotografía y dirección artística que empapan al espectador en el Vietnam tropical. En realidad la guerra es un transparente para las relaciones amorosas del trío, que se resuelve con la muerte del contrincante americano, el americano impasible.

Relación con la novela[editar]

En el número 5 de la Revista Letraceluloide el Profesor Víctor Conenna sostiene que la versión fílmica de 2001 hizo justicia con el texto (por eso, después del atentado a las Torres Gemelas, su estreno se pospuso en poco más de un año). En primer lugar, a diferencia de su antecesora de 1958, la versión de Phillip Noyce cuenta con la excelente actuación de Michael Caine, muy bien acompañado por la actriz vietnamita Do Thi Hai Yen y Brendan Fraser en, hasta el momento, su mejor labor actoral, muy distante de las desempeñadas en películas como La momia, George de la jungla o Al diablo con el diablo. En segundo lugar, le devuelve su contenido ideológico al devolverle al personaje Alden Pyle su rol de agente encubierto, cuya crueldad se manifiesta en imágenes emblemáticas, como cuando, después de haber perpetrado un atentado contra civiles, en medio de las corridas de las personas que intentan socorrer a los heridos, se limpia con un pañuelo la sangre del pantalón. Si bien no es absolutamente fiel al texto original, los agregados (producto de que la película se filmara años después de la finalización de un conflicto, la Guerra de Vietnam, que era previsible en la novela pero que aún no había estallado) hacen que el relato encaje perfectamente en la coyuntura histórica que sobrevino a los hechos narrados por Grahan Greene.

Recepción crítica y comercial[editar]

Obtuvo muy buenas críticas, con un 89% de comentarios positivos, según la página de Internet Rotten Tomatoes, llegando a la siguiente conclusión: "Reflexivo y muy bien interpretado "El americano impasible" captura todo el espíritu de la novela de Graham Greene."[1]
En taquilla no obtuvo tan buenos resultados. En Estados Unidos sólo recaudó 12 millones de dólares. Sumando las recaudaciones internacionales la cifra asciende a casi 28 millones. Su presupuesto fue de 30 millones.
