The persistence of the crisis in Spain and hardness recession has reached in the last months of 2012 and the start of 2013, has caused a sharp increase in companies in bankruptcy. According to data released Wednesday by the INE, 2,854 companies gave in to the weight of debt in the first quarter, representing an increase of 23% over the same period in 2012. Also, never before had registered many bankruptcy proceedings since started collecting this statistic in 2005.
The entry of firms in bankruptcy has been on a steady upward trend since the problems started in Spain, in 2008. In fact, it recorded an annual record in 2012 and, according to what happened in the first quarter of 2013, threatening to go higher. In this period, precisely when the estate was Reyal Urbis starred the second largest bankruptcy in U.S. history.
Following the trend of recent years, one in four belonged to bankrupt companies in the construction sector. As for the rest, 17.1% fell within the trade and 16.3% in manufacturing or energy. In addition, INE figures show that the number of individuals who choose to face competition declare default on its debts is reduced by 31%, to 193. This group peaked in the second quarter of 2011 with 321 although experts advise not to choose this path to try to overcome financial difficulties.
By type of competition, 2,727 of the processes initiated in the first quarter of 2013 were volunteers (25.6% more than in the first quarter of 2012) and 127 needed (17.0% less).
