The food industry, one of the great bastions against the crisis in Spain, in 2012 did not hold a second recession and experienced a drop in sales of 2.68% to 82.298 million euros compared to 88,673 the previous year. The 9.4% increase in exports to the euro 22.078 million was not enough to offset a decline in domestic demand, estimated at 3% of households and 4% out of them. The registered sales volume last year is below 2008 levels, when it stood at 87,600 million euros. Industrial production in the same period fell by 14.9% on food and beverages 10.8%. The difference between the large drop in production and sales milder explained as REL, because an important part of that sales volume has actually corresponded to the output of manufactured inventories and stock before.
In presenting the annual report also attended Professor of Economic Analysis of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and director Simon Sosvilla agricultural sector of La Caixa, Josep Fernández. They reviewed the study and stressed the importance of internationalization of the sector, but also pointed to the enormous fragmentation of the sector: 96.2% of companies in this industry are SMEs. Only 59 companies (0.2% of a total of 29,196) have more than 500 employees.
The food industry, said CEO of REL, Horacio González, despite being suffering in this "second recession" has maintained employment since, although sales fell nearly 2.7% only reduced employment 1.7%. The companies in this sector in 2012 employed 439 675 workers in total, which means that account for 20% of industrial employment in Spain.
A leading sector despite falling
Despite this negative trend in sales, food industry remains one of the main sectors in the overall economic activity with 440,000 workers who account for 20% of all industrial employment. In 2012, despite the crisis, the food industry has become a haven for employment with unemployment levels half the average for the rest of the country.
In 2012 the sector maintains its adjustment process and reduced concentration of 0.47% companies to 29,196. societies. Nevertheless, it remains a highly fragmented activity where only 59 firms have more than 500 employees and 98.2% are small or medium enterprises.
The evolution of the distribution brand is one of the problems facing the industry in 2012 to assume 41.5% of sales compared to 34.3% in 2010. With this percentage, Spain is at the head of the EU countries on the weight of the white markings, 5.9% above the EU average.
Agriculture does not want to carry more taxes
The general secretary of Agriculture, Isabel García Tejerina, who participated in the presentation, outlined the three pillars on which the Administration is basing its policy to support the food industry as a strategic sector of the economy. These lines are specified in a plan for the internationalization of the sector, the development of a balanced policy in the new law of the food chain and innovation plan.
Tejerina Garcia was also against a tax hike on excise rates alcoholic beverages. Government action justified by appealing to the inheritance in the form of extra government spending before. However, he said he would prefer the extra resources need not hit in the Ministry's part.
According to the Secretary General of IFLA, Horacio González, for the sector is also essential to curb tax claims of various regions, a recovery in consumer confidence at a time of falling household incomes, structural reforms such as the defense of market unit, an internationalization plan and commitment to innovation and training.
