Mirrors squeezing the desert
Abengoa Abu Dhabi delivered to the world's largest solar power plant

Is topical image of the desert. Endless red dunes stretching as far as the eye can see. Faced with the first impression, are not quiet. A backlit, can appreciate the grains of sand that the wind to move them up slowly but steadily. That dust, with a great capacity for erosion, is the worst enemy of any polished surface. Yet south of Abu Dhabi, in the eastern confines of the Rub al Khali, the Empty Quarter of the Arabian Desert, just opened the world's largest solar power plant, whose 258,048 mirrors look to the sun to achieve green energy.
The cleaning of the reflectors stunning golf is just one of the many challenges that have faced Abengoa, the Spanish engineering company that has built Shams-1 (G-1). This is the first Solar trough in the Middle East and the first industrial-sized operation. It has capacity to produce 100 megawatts, enough to supply electricity to 20,000 households. The heart of the complex, which extends over 2.5 square kilometers, is a set of rows of parabolic mirrors to concentrate solar radiation onto a central tube by circulating synthetic oil that is heated to 393 degrees.
"The steam drives the turbine which produces electricity generated. Unlike photovoltaic functions as a conventional plant, but without using coal or oil, "said Santiago Seage, Abengoa Solar's president, minutes after the official opening on Sunday. The executive emphasizes the advantage of this system, which is less intermittent because not affected by the passage of clouds. Furthermore, to increase cycle efficiency and ensure even energy production overnight incorporates the complementary use of natural gas. "We used our own technology," adds Seage undisguised satisfaction.
The plant can supply electricity to 20,000 homes
A visit to the resort finds that nearly seven feet wall surrounding the whole is not a simple closure, but a method to slow the winds and protect the mirrors. These also have been manufactured by a Spanish company specialized Rioglass Rioja, one of the 66 different countries that have collaborated on the project. Both the five trucks to clean the reflectors and the turbine, a monster of 220 tons, were manufactured on purpose. In addition, the facility includes a dry cooling system that significantly reduces water consumption, a critical advantage in the desert.
Allied with the French energy company Total, Abengoa in 2009 won the tender for the supply of electricity for 25 years to the grid of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the seven members of the federation of United Arab Emirates (UAE). Both then formed Shams Power consortium, along with Masdar, the renewable energy company in the emirate, which reserved a 60%. The rest is distributed equally between the two European participants, who will also take over management of the plant.
"It is a strategic project that will help diversify our economy and move from being based on hydrocarbons to rely on technology," said Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar, during a press conference later.
The construction of the plant represents an investment of 470 million euros
Evidence of the importance that governments attach to the project, the opening was attended by the president of Emirates and emir of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa al Nahyan, the prime minister and the emir of Dubai, Sheik Mohammed al Maktoum, and the heir Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed Al Nahyan. The construction of the plant, which has lasted for three years, has made a total investment of 2.200 billion dirhams (470 million euros).
Despite having a 9% of world oil reserves, Abu Dhabi has been a pioneer in the region in the development of alternative energies. With the addition of Shams-1, Masdar reaches 68% of renewable energy capacity in the Arabian Peninsula, and almost 10% of the global installed CSP.
"The Middle East has about half of global renewable energy potential," reveals Seage. In his opinion, "the region needs more projects like Shams-1", in which the company expects to participate presiding.
For Abengoa, Shams-1 is a showcase for the countries of the area, such as Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar, have shown interest in clean energy, know about their work. The company, based in Seville, currently has 15 operating solar plants on four continents and six under construction. When the next fall into operation which are ending in Arizona (USA) with a capacity of 280 megawatts dethrone as the most thermal Emirati world.
