The Telefónica Group closed the first quarter of 2013 with a net profit of 902 million euros, representing an increase of 20.6% over the same period last year, according to the Commission has informed the National Securities Market. The results are in line with the company's internal forecasts, which reiterated the financial and operational targets set for 2013. In underlying terms, ie, excluding all exceptional impacts in both years, net income recorded a fall of 7.9%.
Revenue amounted to 14.141 million euros, down 8.8% (-1.6% year in organic terms) and gross operating profit (OIBDA) went up to 4.567 million euros, 10.1% less (-0.1% in organic terms). For the second consecutive quarter, Latin America generates over 50% of consolidated revenues for the first time Brazil has become the largest market for Telefónica in income generation. However, the strong performance of Latin America could not offset the decrease in revenues of Telefónica Europe (-10.5%), which continue to reflect the macroeconomic situation, the high competitive intensity and the negative impact of regulation.
Operating revenues of Telefónica Spain reached 3,260 million euros in the first quarter of 2013 (-16.4% YoY) impacted by the sharp decline in sales revenue of mobile terminals as a result of the elimination of subsidies for new customers in March 2012.
The company ended the quarter with debt of 51.809 million euros, 550 million more than at year end 2012. The company explains that this chapter has been negatively impacted by exceptional effects, in particular by the devaluation of the Venezuelan bolivar (873 million) and payments for spectrum auctions (701 million), as well as the seasonal effect in the first quarter itself year. Subsequent to quarter end, the operator conducted several operations that have reduced net debt by 653 million euros and now stand at 51.156 million euros.
Telefónica managed 315.7 million March closing lines, 2% more than the previous year mainly due to the boost in wireless contract and especially smartphones. Mobile accesses stood at 247.3 million at the end of the quarter (+3% yoy), continuing the contract segment as the main focus of the business of the company.
The market has received the results of the company with a decline in its share price. The losses, however, have been moderating as the session has progressed and, at noon, slowed the cut below 1% to 11.17 euros, which traded a green Ibex.
