International Airlines Group (IAG), the group resulting from the merger of Iberia and British Airways (BA), lost 630 million euros through March, nearly 5 times more than the 129 million lost in the first quarter of 2012, conditional on restructuring of Spanish. Thus, next to the red which gives the company's operating results, rising to 278 million (compared with 249 million 2012), IAG recognized a charge of $ 311 million for other staff adjustments and former airline capacity flag of Spain, which, according to the accounts presented by the matrix remains a drag on the group's business. In fact, she is responsible for 80% of the red, as its operating loss amounted to 202 million compared to 58 million pounds (68 million euros) of its partner British Airways.
In a statement to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), the group claims that this extraordinary charge relates "primarily related to the restructuring of Iberia", where there is a redundancy affecting 3,147 workers. Also reveals that the mediator's proposal to close the record of employment regulation has cost the company an additional 265 million. In March, former CEO of the airline since 2009, Rafael Sánchez-Lozano, resigned worn by the process pressure. It was replaced by Luis Gallego.
"We are adapting the capacity to demand and we are recording strong revenue performance unit group passage despite ten days of union conflict in Iberia and the weak economic situation in Spain," said the CEO of IAG, Willie Walsh said in the statement. The conflict plunged Iberia traffic in the first quarter.
Despite these problems, revenue rose 0.5% to 3.939 million euros, including 46 million by the unfavorable impact of currency translation. Keep in mind that this year the Easter period when growing air traffic, has been in March. The registered passenger unit revenue in the quarter rose 3.9%, or 5.3% at constant exchange rates. This was possible because the capacity reduced by 2.1% and the ratio of passengers per kilometer transported.
Moreover, while fuel costs fell, with a cut of 3.4% coinciding with the drop in oil prices up to 1,361 million euros, rising costs per passenger. Specifically, 3.3% "because of two transitional measures that will benefit the long-term group," says Walsh. The first is that Iberia cut capacity, although downsizing and labor costs which it expects savings of up to 360 million (2015) did not start until April. The second is that British Airways has increased its staff in anticipation of the arrival of new aircraft this year, added the CEO.
Cash, located at 2.833 million euros at the end of the quarter, decreased by 76 million euros, and the group's net debt fell by 157 million in the same period, to € 1,732 million.
