The oil is stirred. The possibility of a low minimum harvest triggered alarms among the growers, who expected a higher productions. Forecasts for this year were 820,000 tons, compared to 1.6 million tonnes from the previous season, which was a record. But half the collection has become clear that the harvest will range between 492,000 and 600,000 tonnes, representing back to 1995 levels.
The highlight of this is that the sharp drop in the harvest occurs in a sector that increased surface to 2.5 million hectares, of which about 600,000 are irrigated, and which have proliferated intensive olive groves high yields.
The reasons for the collapse of the crop was attributed to adverse weather conditions fully throughout the campaign. In the spring the sector suffered cold and lack of rain. He kept drought during the summer and autumn rains only served to fatten slightly olive, but without producing oil. Farmers major producing areas of Jaén not believe they have just completed the collection with only 25% of production over last season.
The bad season can force triple imports
In 2012 the total demand of olive oil amounted to 1,450,000 tons, of which 875,000 were for export and the rest to the market. This campaign began on October 1 with reserves of 679,000 tonnes which, added to the expected harvest this year, it will not meet the total needs of the current demand. This situation may force triple traditionally imports which amounted to 40,000 tons. The fall harvest has had an immediate effect on prices. These have remained low ebb in the last two years, about 1.65 euros per kilo at home for half-rate quality, but last summer jumped to 2.4 euros per kilo and, at present, the price and rises to nearly three euros, clearly upward trend. This sharp rise is causing a severe drop in domestic demand since last fall. Also feared the possibility of losing foreign markets against rising yields from third countries of North Africa.
