The deputy mayor of Lloret de Mar (Girona), Josep Valls, has been released accused of corruption and bribery after testifying before the National Court Judge Eloy Velasco for about an hour, in the case against laundering network Russian Mafia in the town of Girona.
The judge has issued precautionary measures against Valls withdrawal of passport and banned from leaving the country without permission of the judge, legal sources have reported. Valls was arrested early yesterday at his home in Lloret de Mar by the Civil Guard.
The arrest of Valls, who was Town Planning in the era in which the CiU autonomic deputy mayor Xavier Lloret Crespo era (2003-2011), answers his capacity as chairman of the football club in the town, a team that received sponsorship by Petrov between 2007 and 2010, a total of 90,000 euros. So far, Judge Velasco has decreed the imprisonment of the alleged ringleader of the plot, Andrei Petrov, which was its architect, Pilar Gimeno, and his right hand and brother, Konstantin Mischanina. Petrov's secretary, after testifying before the judge, was released with charges and protection 24 hours.
Velasco also freed on Monday accused of bribing the president of the hockey club, Jaume Perarnau. The prosecution suspects that both Petrov sponsored sports teams Lloret totaling 270,000 euros in exchange for favorable treatment by the City, which waived the payment of 133,500 euros of tax on the construction of a shopping center in the bullring.
With Valls, detained since last Friday Clotilde operation amounted to eight people. The case against the Russian mafia could, however, happen to be investigated in the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) after yesterday asked Judge Velasco is credited volumetric condition for being deputy regional Crespo. Those arrested are accused of laundering more than 56 billion euros over two years in businesses of all types in Catalonia.
