The European Central Bank (ECB) "or withdraw authorizations to ensure credit institutions to carry out mergers and acquisitions affecting the institutions under their responsibility." So said the ECB Vice President Vitor Constancio told a forum held in Frankfurt bank in which he spoke of the joint European banking.
Constantius he added that for this the ECB will hold a direct supervision and prompt assistance to national authorities where appropriate. The new regulatory framework for banking union implies that the relevant credit institutions and those receiving direct support from European funds temporary and permanent rescue (EFSF and ESM respectively) are supervised directly by the ECB Constancio said.
The ECB will be supported by competent national authorities in accordance with the instructions of the ECB. In practice, the central bank will be directly responsible for the supervision of a limited number of institutions which covers over 80% of the European banking system in terms of assets.
"The ECB, on the basis of the information and data received, may decide at any time to exercise supervisory powers also directly on one or more credit institutions, on its own initiative or at the request of the competent national authorities," said Constancio.
