Amnesty International ( AI) has reported today that Iran has executed 40 people so far this year , including 33 in the last seven days. The high number of executions in contrast to the hopes raised by the arrival of Hasan Rohani to the presidency last year. Iran, the country that most applies capital punishment, concluded 2013 with 624 executions, a hundred more than the previous year, according to the Documentation Center of Human Rights in Iran . At least fifty of them were public .
" The high number of executions in Iran this month is alarming. Attempts by the Iranian authorities to change its international image are useless if while executions continue to rise , "said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty 's Deputy Director for Middle East and North Africa , in a statement released by the organization .
Since early 2014 , AI, working to eradicate the death penalty , has recorded 21 executions officially recognized by the Iranian authorities and more than 19 have been reported by reliable sources of credit. Only in the week between 9 and January 16 have been carried out more executions in Iran announced that throughout the month of January last year .
Most of the prisoners were sentenced for alleged drug offenses. But AI remembers that " according to international standards , nonlethal crimes such as drug-related , are not among the most serious of which has limited the death penalty ." In addition , the Narcotics Act recognizes Iran condemned for that reason the right to bring a significant appeal , " something against international obligations of the country," requiring ensure the right of appeal against any sentence guilt.
"In Iran, drug offenses are in revolutionary tribunals routinely violated international fair trial standards . The truth is that death sentence is ruthlessly unfair trials , and that is unacceptable , "said Sahraoui.
Amnesty International calls on the Iranian authorities to commute all death sentences and officially suspended all executions in that country are usually carried out hanging the condemned from a crane sometimes in public . It also calls for ending the secrecy surrounding the use of capital punishment . The human rights activists suspect that punishment is covertly used to silence political dissidents , especially ethnic minorities.
" The Iranian authorities must take urgent steps to abolish the death penalty, as it has been proven time and again that it has no unique deterrent effect on crime ," responsible for AI calls .
To mark the World Day Against the Death Penalty on 10 October , the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran and said Documentation Centre , noted that since the inauguration of Rohani in August there had been an increase in executions . In the two weeks between 11 and 25 September, Iran executed them to 50 people , a record .
Some observers peguntaron then if the most reactionary sectors , which control the judiciary, trying to tarnish the image of Iran that new Rohani trying to project abroad. But the reality is that the new government focused on reaching agreement on its nuclear program to obtain the lifting of international sanctions, has not even proposed a revision of the judicial system, which allows not only the death penalty but many considered corporal punishment cruel and inhuman . In 2010 sentenced to death by stoning a judge ruled against Sakineh Ashtiani seriously damaged the image of the Islamic Republic in the world, although it was finally revised .
